Impressive results from Working Party
Waterhouses Junction, Daisy Nook Country Park, with a much tidier off-side bank after the Canal Society's latest working party.

In spite of the weather, which was gloomy, although mostly dry, the team of volunteers managed to complete the work, started last winter, of cutting back vegetation hanging out over (and into) the canal from the off-side. In places the overhanging boughs reached almost to the towpath and it was almost a surprise to see just how wide the canal is in this area!

Major trim for offside vegetation
In our January working parties, volunteers from the canal society and Waterway Recovery Group achieved a long desired aim of trimming back vegetation on the offside of the canal near Pinch Farm.
The trees had hung across the canal, sometimes more than half way. We had received many comments about how bad the vegetation was looking. Eventually we were able to negotiate access to the land and work out a plan for how we would tackle the task.
The 'before and after' photos show what a difference the work has made to the the appearance of this stretch of water. The brambles and undergrowth that we cut back to get access to the trees will quickly grow back.

Pinch Farm Footbridge
Work on the towpath abutment of Pinch Farm Footbridge is now largely complete. A small area of pointing is still to be done on a section of wall not visible from the towpath and it is intended to complete this as part of a working party later in the year.
It is hoped that capping stones lying on the ground can be put back into position if enough strong hands are available!

Events: July Working Party
Please be advised that our next working party will be held next weekend, Saturday/Sunday 6th/7th July at Daisy Nook - Meet at the John Howarth Visitor Centre (off Stannybrook Road, Failsworth) 9:30 for 10:00 each day.
Work will be progressing the restoration of the abutment & parapet walls of Pinches Farm Bridge. No previous experience is necessary, as training will be given.
Please come along and support the restoration of the Hollinwood Canal. Events: June Working Party

This is a special working party to begin repairs to the brick abutments of Pinch Farm Footbridge at Daisy Nook.
This is the first of several days when we will be working on the brickwork of this bridge. Members are welcome to come and help, especially those with bricklaying and pointing skills.
The bridge is owned by Oldham Council, who have paid for the materials to be used.

First Working Party in Tameside
Volunteers from the Hollinwood Canal Society, Waterway Recovery Group and Tameside Countryside Service came together last weekend (6th & 7th October) for a joint working party on the Hollinwood Branch Canal at Well Style, between Littlemoss and Daisy Nook.
This was the first time that the Society and WRG had worked with Tameside Countryside Service. Overgrown vegetation was removed from the disused canal bed, bringing back a more open habitat.
Hollinwood Canal Society chairman Frank Smith said, "The volunteers from Waterway Recovery Group and the Canal Society enjoyed working with the Tameside volunteers in a new location.
"Removing surplus vegetation helps to preserve what is left of the canal's structure. Making the canal more visible helps to make people aware of the canal as part of the historic infrastructure of Tameside."
Tameside Countryside Service provided a heavy duty chipper resulting in a very effective weekend's work opening up an area that had become very closed-in and overgrown.
